What Granny Said: Molasses Cookies

Molasses Cookies

3/4 cup butter (or shortening of your choice, but don’t blame me if they don’t taste buttery)
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt

Melt shortening in 3 or 4 gallon saucepan over low heat.
Remove from heat, let cool.
Add sugar, molasses, and egg.
Beat well.
Sift together flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt.
Add to first mixture, mix well, and chill.
Form into 1” balls. Roll in sugar, place on greased cookie sheet, and flatten with glass bottom.
Bake at 375 degrees 8-10 minutes. Don’t over bake!
These are delicious and flavorful.

Note: they are delicious and flavorful but that editorial comment is not from me. It was on the original recipe I copied from I-can’t-remember-where, and I want to preserve the integrity of the original.
